Carwash Section Breaking Down the Numbers Fast Lube Operator's Survey Split by National Average, Fast Lube Only, Fast Lube/Carwash by Tammy Neal ~ NOLN Staff Writer ~ tammy.neal@noln.net Fast lube/carwash combination facilities are becoming more and more common throughout the industry. As operators seek additional profit centers to beef up busi- ness, these industries overlap more and more every year. A contributor to the COG is oil, and, cor- respondingly, lube/carwash combination facilities pay the least for a gallon of bulk oil. Te average price for a lube/carwash facility is $8.50, compared to a national av- erage of $8.65 and a fast lube-only average of $9.01. t Fast lube/carwash facilities perform the most oil changes per day — 32. Fast lube- only shops perform an average of 31 oil changes per day, while the national average is 30.5. t Tis point is logical, since combo facili- 26 www.noln.net operations Independent/company-owned facilities Franchised facilities Years in the fast lube business Number of facilities per response Cost of goods for standard, full-service LOF Average ticket total Number of oil changes performed per day Total number of cars serviced per day (including inspections, repair work, etc.) Break-even car count Percentage of business that is oil change Number of bays per facility Yearly sales per store prices Price of standard, full-service LOF/multipoint check Operators who offer basic, low-cost LOF service Price, if offered Operators who offer premium LOF (w/ specialty/high mileage motor oil) Price, if offered Operators who offer premium LOF (w/ synthetic motor oil) Price, if offered Operators increasing LOF price in the past 12 months Amount of increase Competitors discounting their oil change Amount of discount Operators discounting their own oil changes Amount of discount demographics Oil change facilities within three miles of respondent Daily traffic count in front of best store Miles customers drive between oil changes oil & equipment Per-gallon cost of highest volume bulk oil Overall breakdown of motor oil sales: Conventional/synthetic blend High mileage Full synthetic Diesel Other Operations that sell re-refined motor oil Percent of customers who purchase $8.65 70% 10% 11% 8% 1% 38% 5% $9.01 68% 11% 11% 8% 1% 45% 5% $8.50 71% 12% 0% 9% 8% 49% 3% 8.6 22,625 4,520 8.1 21,846 5,079 7.1 26,954 4,639 $35.03 38% $28.06 89% $48.71 95% $65.86 66% $2.51 92% $7.45 74% $5.25 $35.93 32% $29.67 89% $49.01 96% $66.63 71% $2.46 96% $7.39 73% $5.17 $35.39 25% $27.70 97% $48.31 100% $65.63 42% $2.00 82% $7.39 68% $5.59 National Avg. 73% 27% 13.2 2.6 $15.33 $56.29 30.5 37.3 23.6 63% 3.4 $601,164 Fast Lube 71% 29% 14.0 3.1 $16.23 $56.00 31.0 36.9 23.9 74% 2.9 $542,375 Fast Lube/Carwash 83% 17% 14.4 2.5 $13.78 $57.20 32.0 40.6 23.8 60% 3.0 $621,311
